Conservation District Projects Awarded for Nonpoint Source Mini-grant Program

Pennsylvania’s county conservation districts were awarded nearly $37,000 for twenty-one pollution reduction projects in twenty counties. These projects will educate adults on water pollution prevention. The projects are funded through the Nonpoint Source (NPS) Pollution Prevention Educational Mini-Grant Program and will take place over the next year.

Second Week of Agricultural Conservation Technical “Boot Camp” Training Level II Concludes

Twenty-one individuals attended the second Agricultural Conservation Technical Boot Camp Training session – Level II, May 13-17, 2024. The training was held at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office in Harrisburg, PA. Attendees included staff from conservation districts, the USDA NRCS and affiliates, and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the State Conservation Commission sponsor the training, which PACD coordinates with these partners.

To cap off Conservation District Week, the McKean County Conservation District (MCCD) directors and staff held a legislative tour to promote dedicated funding for the Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program. The district welcomed Senator Dush, Representative Causer, Commissioner Tom Kreiner, Ann Kaufman from Congressman Glenn Thompson’s office, State Conservation Commission Executive Director Doug Wolfgang, and representatives from the State Conservation Commission, Penn State Extension, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to the event.

Venango Conservation District Holds Farm Tour

On April 26, Venango Conservation District hosted a Farm Bus Tour at three beef farms in Utica, PA. About 30 people attended to learn about grazing systems, nonpoint source pollution, manure/nutrient management, safety tips, and funding sources for constructing agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs).

The district would like to thank all of the amazing presenters who shared their expertise and time with them, and the Metz, Dunkerly, and Mahler families for allowing the group to tour their farms! The district also extends their appreciation to Project Grass NW Chapter for sponsoring breakfast and the Utica Volunteer Fire Department for allowing the use of their space.

Westmoreland Conservation District Holds Conservation Bike Ride

The Westmoreland Conservation District partnered with the Jacobs Creek Watershed Association and the Coal and Coke Trail Chapter to host the 2024 Pedaling for Conservation bike ride along the Coal and Coke Trail. Participants learned about stormwater, streambank erosion, problems related to abandoned mine drainage, and mosquito testing for West Nile Virus.

Spring Leadership Webinars Focus on Board Development

The 2024 Spring Leadership Webinar series will continue to focus on Board Development with a pair of lunch-and-learn webinars on two Wednesdays, May 29, and June 12. These webinars will cover the topics presented at the in-person regional Strategic Board Development Workshops, including SCC guidelines and requirements for both director nomination and approval of nominating organizations, the importance of board development in the district’s success, and the role of intentional outreach in recruitment strategy.

The sessions will also include a review of orientation, training, and development resources. All newly-appointed directors and new associate directors are encouraged to attend. Click here to register.

Intro to Conservation Planning Training Concludes

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Resource Conservationist Dayanna Barnes kicks off the Intro to Conservation Planning course on May 7, 2024.

Twenty-eight students attended the Intro to Conservation Planning training in Grantville, PA, from May 7 to 9, 2024. The three-day training provided a mix of classroom learning and field experience.

The training was made possible by USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the State Conservation Commission. PACD provided administrative support.

Montgomery County Conservation District Holds Tour of “Food Forest”

On April 20, 2024, Montgomery County Conservation District’s Watershed Specialist Brian Vadino worked in partnership with Martha’s Choice Marketplace and Community Farm and Penn State Master Watershed Stewards Program in Montgomery County to host a tour of a riparian buffer food forest planting project that was completed at the Farm along Perkiomen Creek in Fall 2022.

The riparian buffer tour was designed to showcase the completed project and was delivered in conjunction with a public tour of other planting areas (gardens and greenhouses) located at Martha’s Choice Marketplace and Community Farm. The Farm is the largest food pantry in Montgomery County, serving almost 20,000 individuals and delivering 1.5 million pounds of food every year.
